Zarqawi is hurt, Iraq Interior Minister confirms
BAGHDAD: Iraq's Interior Minister last night confirmed Jordanian born terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had been wounded."We received information five days ago saying Zarqawi had been wounded but we don't know the seriousness of his injuries," Interior Minister Bayan Baqer Solagh said at a press conference with Defence Minister Saadun al-Dulaimi.
Mr Dulaimi announced that a security cordon was to be set up around Baghdad involving about 40,000 soldiers and police and hundreds of checkpoints in an effort to thwart insurgent attacks, which have cost more than 600 lives nationwide this month.
"We're going to set up a security cordon around Baghdad ... and it will be impossible for terrorists to cross," he claimed, saying the plan would come into operation next week.
The confirmation of Zarqawi's wounding came as al-Qa'ida's branch in Iraq denied it had named a stand-in for the terrorist leader. An Islamic website claimed Zarqawi had fled to a "neighbouring country" with two doctors, a Saudi and a Sudanese, treating him for gunshot wounds to his lung.
