Death of girl in the Triangle was avoidable

Melanise Malone became Dr. David Shatz's responsibility at 1:34 a.m. Wednesday.
Shot in the head, the 5-year-old, nicknamed ''Neenee,'' was in full cardiac arrest when paramedics -- still frantically performing CPR -- rushed her into the Ryder Trauma Center. It took paramedics just 21 minutes to get Neenee onto a gurney and drive her to the trauma center from Opa-locka.Scoop and run. That's what they call it. Scoop and run.Shatz was two-thirds of the way through a 24-hour shift when the little girl arrived. Anytime a patient arrives in cardiac arrest and receiving CPR, the chances of recovery are never very good.''It was a pretty ominous sign,'' he said of Neenee's condition. ``But you don't give up.''As he assessed Neenee's medical needs, Shatz couldn't help but notice that the child's hair was in braids. ''She had pigtails,'' he recalled Wednesday afternoon.Click title for link...
