House Panel Appproves Jessica Lunsford Act
TALLAHASSEE, FL (AP) -- A House panel has moved a bill to track sex offenders.
The bill was approved unanimously today by the House Criminal Justice Committee.
It's named the Jessica Lunsford Act for the little girl from Homosassa whose body was found March 19th.The man accused of her murder was a registered sex offender who was on probation at the time. The bill was sponsored by Representative Charlie Dean who is the former sheriff of Citrus County where Jessica lived.Click on title for link.
The Miami Herald opines "MORE VIGILANCE OF RELEASED SEX OFFENDERS NEEDED"...and so do we.
"Jessica Lunsford's death...is a tragedy...the corruption and destruction of innocence by unmitigated evil. Her death is made worse by the knowledge that this is not the first time it has happened and probably not the last, either. A number of things went wrong in the events leading up to the death of Jessica, but the long and short of it is that a convicted criminal out on probation who never should have come close to a child got lost in the system. As a result, a child who deserved protection did not have it"... Link
