The Patriot Act Renewal...Let Cooler Heads Prevail
Provisions of the Patriot Act are scheduled to expire at the end of this year...
I would rather stick to the facts and stay away from labels or the rhetoric surrounding the Patriot Act.There are definite positive aspects of the Patriot Act which allow law enforcement to effectively execute their work and are a crucial part of several criminal prosecutions involving terrorists here in the U.S and abroad.
There exist negative aspects of the Patriot Act that may result in the erroding of our freedoms and civil liberties in the name of keeping us safe. The issue of the Patriot Act being used as a tool in drug trafficking,RICO and other criminal investigations presents a problem where American citizens are being charged under laws intended for terrorists(and their not terrorists).
Our constitution was not drafted in 6 weeks as was the fastest piece of legislation passed in our history...the Patriot Act...
We should not let fear of the enemy or fear of "losing power" dominate our decision making and allow us to undermine what this country is all about. The parts of the Patriot Act which can be deemed necessary and serving a purpose desired in combatting terrorism should be renewed.Other aspects where it may be deemed unconstitutional and in contrast to what we consider a free society should be eliminated. We are a free nation and can never prevent every single maniac who wishes to inflict damage upon us...and as citizens we have a duty to defend our constitution...if through fear we throw out our sacred rights in the name of safety the terrorists have already won!
