Pope John Paul II dies at 84

The pope was born in Wadowice, Poland, a small city near Krakow, in 1920. His studies at Jagiellonian University in Krakow were interrupted by the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939. The future pontiff went to work in a quarry and later joined an underground theater group and ultimately entered a clandestine seminary. He earned degrees from the Catholic University in Lublin, Poland, and from Jagiellonian University. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1946 and became Krakow's archbishop 17 years later. He was elevated to cardinal in 1967.Eleven years later, on the heels of predecessor John Paul I's death just one month into his papacy, then-Cardinal Wojtyla was elected pope on Oct. 16, 1978, becoming the first non-Italian pontiff in 41/2 centuries.
